The Sunrise Alarm Clock

Designed to provide a natural and gentle wake-up experience by simulating the gradual increase of sunlight at dawn. This project combines engineering and user-centered design to improve the way people wake up, enhancing mood and alertness by mimicking the sunrise’s effect on our circadian rhythm.

Features

Living in a northern state, waking up in darkness is rarely a surprise for me in the winter.  I built this alarm clock to help me wake up feeling energized in the dead of winter and help counteract the shock of artificial light exposure as I wind down for bed. 
  • Gradual Light Increase: Instead of a sudden alarm, the clock gradually brightens an LED light to simulate sunrise, waking you up gently and can be set to decrease light levels in the hour leading up to bed time.
  • Customizable Wake-Up Times: Set your preferred wake-up time, and the light will start increasing brightness 1 hour before the alarm.
  • Multi-Color LEDs: Red, amber, and white LEDs were used in the design so the color of the sunset and sunrise can be mimicked to allow for a more natural cortisol and melatonin release in the body.
  • Sound Integration: The clock also includes a calming melody that gradually increases in volume at the set wakeup time to let your body know it is time to wake up. 

Technology and Components

  • 3D Printed Shell: The body of the clock was modeled in Fusion 360 and 3D printed and painted in different colors to allow light to only shine through the front of the clock.
  • Microcontroller: The project uses an arduino microcontroller to manage the light intensity and timing for the gradual sunrise simulation.
  • LED Lights: Bright, energy-efficient LED lights simulate the effect of a rising sun.
  • Real-Time Clock Module: Ensures precise timing of the wake-up sequence

Outcome

  • The Sunrise Alarm Clock offers a healthier, more natural waking experience that aligns with our body’s circadian rhythm, improving both sleep quality and overall wellness.
